Preston Guyton is a father, husband, entrepreneur and real estate investor. He has been helping people realize their home ownership dreams since 2004

The first company he launched was CRG Companies, Inc, a construction and real estate firm founded in 2010 that focused on home design, construction, real estate, and newer technologies. After growing CRG Companies, Inc. to over 130 million a year in real estate sales and over 20 million a year in custom construction sales, Preston sold out to his business partners in 2020. In 2020 Preston launched the EZ Home Search website with the goal to create an easy to use home search website that covers all markets in SC and NC.    ezHomeSearch.com was built to allow visitors to search without hassle, educate throughout the process, and only connect visitors to a real estate or mortgage professional when they asked to be connected.

With all the companies Preston has been a part of, he believes that building a leadership team and trusting that team is one of the keys to a successful business.

Unlike Preston, Travis McClure considers himself an “Intrepreneur”—someone who specializes in operational and managerial aspects of a business. As a teenager, he worked at his parents’ restaurant where he learned how to manage people, a skill he has put to good use throughout his life. He served in the military for 3 years, then worked in technology services and corporate retail for several years until the corporate grind got to him; he found himself craving more freedom than the 9-to-5 life could offer. Travis then joined the real estate industry and now enjoys being part of something that is sure to grow rapidly as it continues to evolve.

GOAL VS COMMITMENT

Making a commitment is not as easy as setting a goal. Commitments are powerful tools for creating your future because it is a choice to create a desired outcome. Without commitment, it’s like you’re in a boat without direction; you don’t have the tools to navigate and get to your destination. Commitment and goal should coexist in order to be successful personally and professionally. You cannot fully commit to something without a goal and you cannot achieve your goal if you don’t commit to the steps to reach it.

Preston and Travis attest that “commitment” is one of the core values at Palms Realty. It’s not rocket science that if you put in the daily effort and commitment, you’ll reach your goals. And it’s okay to be uncomfortable while doing so because you can’t always get what you want unless you are 100% committed to taking the necessary steps. And if something doesn’t work out as well as you’d hoped, don’t worry—as long as you’re moving forward you can still achieve your goals. The important thing is to keep going and enjoy the journey.

What is your MISSION STATEMENT?

Let’s face it, nobody on their deathbeds wishes they had spent more time at work. And nobody regrets not having enough money. But people often regret how they spent their time and how they treated other people. However, having a lot of money is still the main definition of success for many young people. Yes, perhaps money can buy you the things that make you happy but it cannot buy you total freedom and peace of mind.

Preston elaborates that when he stopped chasing money, he started making more money. He credits this to the fact that he focused more on making an impact on the people around him, on how he could commit to alleviating their troubles and concerns. For Preston and Travis, wealth means having the freedom to do what you want to do when you want to do it—a belief that truly matters.

CONCLUSION: WHAT VS WHY

Everybody has a “why”. The reasons could be their family, kids or something they deem important. But Preston explains how people should focus more on asking “what?” because this will create an interesting view shift in you as you move along in the industry. When you ask, “Why do I want to do this?” you think about the reasons behind it. But when you ask, “What can I get out of it?”, you focus more on what’s in it for you if you achieve your goals. This “What’s in it for you”, could be paying off debt, buying a house, the ring for your proposal, a car, etc. Taking this perspective will help you develop a  different viewpoint on why staying committed is so important to you.

Rather than looking at things in a broader sense, you should try to narrow the scope of your work to what you could add or get. You could even flip that around—“what could I offer?”—the answer will probably be the same. Finding value in every opportunity is an incredibly rewarding and empowering lesson to learn.

People all have certain outlooks in life that color their points of view. The real estate industry is a challenge that requires you to look past your own biases. So in order to maximize your impact as a Realtor, try not to forget the little things. Take some time to ask yourself if you’re in this industry because of what it can do for you or because of why you are doing it. It’s an easy mind-shift to make and will allow you to become more creative and insightful as you advance in the field.
