Hidenwood is a charming section of Newport News founded in the 1950s as a picturesque suburb. It’s located just southwest of the city center around Lake Queen Anne and beside the James River. This neighborhood is just minutes from Christopher Newport University, which has many options nearby for groceries, shopping, and dining.

Many of the residences are on or near the water. Some properties have retained their lovely historical look with small shutters and brick exteriors.

James River Country Club is part of Hidenwood, although the entrance is through Riverside.

It has a great blend of single-family homes and apartments. August 2022 home prices ranged from $554,500 to $1.4 M.

Hilton Village

Hilton Village is one of the very first planned communities in America and was designed by Henry Hubbard as an English-style village with beautiful Colonial Revival and Jacobethan architecture. Many of the original 473 houses are from when it was built to house workers for Newport News Shipbuilding during World War I, which is a testament to its design. The American Planning Association even named Hilton Village one of America’s Great Neighborhoods.

Near the residences is the Hilton Village Shopping District along Warwick Boulevard. The collection of shops includes antique shops, jewelry stores, and bakeries. The community runs along the James River, and Riverfront Park provides public access. A Blue Ribbon School, Hilton Elementary, is near the park. It has a solid academic reputation and offers a communication arts magnet program that attracts many families.

Most of the houses in Hilton Village are single-family homes with three and four-bedrooms. Two homes were on the market in August 2022, ranging from $265,000 to $275,000.

Kiln Creek

Kiln Creek is a 1,200-acre neighborhood known for its motto, “A Great Place To Be.” The large neighborhood has almost 3,000 houses and 12,000 residents across part of York County and Newport News near Victory Boulevard.

The community is built around Kiln Creek Golf Club & Resort and its championship 18-hole golf course. It was chosen as one of Virginia’s top five courses by Golf Digest. Many homes are on the course.

The Villages of Kiln Creek Homeowners Association is a “Best Overall Community Association of the Year” award recipient. The association’s four-acre recreation center complex contains an Olympic-size pool, picnic areas, playgrounds, tot-lots, tennis courts, and a multi-purpose court.

It’s located in the Oyster Point area of Newport News at the intersections of Jefferson Avenue and Loftis Boulevard. It’s a short trip away from Interstate 64, the Newport-News Williamsburg Airport, and Patrick Henry Square.

The focal point of this neighborhood is Styron Square, where you’ll find hair salons, restaurants, and upscale homes. As for medical care, there’s an on-site urgent care center, medical office buildings, and Port Warwick Dental Arts. The major disadvantage of this location is the absence of shops. Because there aren’t many alternatives within the zone, you’ll have to travel elsewhere to get food, eats, or coffee.

Carriage Hill

As the shipbuilding industry boomed in Newport News, this residential area grew to accommodate workers employed at Newport News Shipbuilding. It sits on a bluff overlooking the James River.

North End boasts lovely examples of Victorian and Bungalow architecture for those who appreciate history. Many homes date to the 1900s-1930s. With homes containing marble windowsills, stained glass, and other fine wood features, it’s no wonder it has been on the National Register of Historic Places.

The North End-Huntington Heights Preservation Association works to preserve the architectural character and create a close-knit community.

Deep Creek

Deep Creek is located near the James River and looks across its namesake waterway toward Menchville. Unlike Menchville, Deep Creek has more shopping and dining options for residents to choose from.

Homes in Deep Creek are primarily single-family residences, though some are apartment complexes. Many homes were developed between 1970 and 1990. There are few sidewalks in Deep Creek, which can concern families with young children.

August 2022’s median home price was $375,000, with four listings.

Shore Park

Shore Park/Old Orchard is one of the best places to reside and work in Newport News due to its location along Warwick River and Lucas Creek.

This neighborhood is north of Menchville, but shopping and dining are available close at hand. It’s great not having to go more than a few blocks away to shop for food, gasoline, or dinner! Beechwood

The neighborhood is home to a mix of industrial businesses and residential properties. A few shops, restaurants, and bars are located around the area, but most people would have to travel out of Beechwood to locate what they need. Schools in the area are typically regarded highly, although some exceptions exist.
